Tough news for the New York Rangers as star goalie Igor Shesterkin has reportedly turned down a contract offer that would have been record-breaking for the NHL

This could mark a major turning point for the New York Rangers and their star goaltender Igor Shesterkin. There are reports that Shesterkin has turned down an offer from the Rangers on an extension that would have made him the highest paid goalie in the NHL ever.

As we reported late in September, the New York Rangers were prepared to give Igor Shesterkin a new deal that would have been above the $10.5 million per year made by Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens. According to insider Kevin Weekes, that offer was made. The Rangers were prepared to give Shesterkin a contract worth $88 million over 8 years, giving him an average annual value of $11 million. It was rejected.

At the beginning of the summer, we reported that Igor Shesterkin was looking for a deal that carried an AAV of at least $12 million per season. It seems Shesterkin is sticking with that ask, despite the burden it would place on the New York Rangers' salary cap.

Igor Shesterkin's current contract, which runs out after this season, pays him $5.66 million. The New York Rangers may have a hard time getting him to drop the amount of money he's asking for considering the the NHL recently named Igor Shesterkin as the goaltender most likely to win the Vezina trophy this season as the league's top netminder. Shesterkin is a restricted free agent once his current contract runs out, which means he would be free to negotiate with all other NHL teams. There's no question there will be plenty of interest if that happens. The New York Rangers are now in a very tough spot.
