Un expert du site The Hockey Writers a tenté l'expérience de reproduire le repêchage 2017 de la LNH. C'est toujours un exercice amusant à faire quelques années après, pour pouvoir évaluer comment les jeunes ont progressé et quelles équipes ont eu le compas dans l'oeil.

C'est sans aucune surprise que Cale Makar pointe au premier rang, ce qui aurait fait de lui un Devil du New Jersey, alors que Nick Suzuki aurait dû appartenir à l'Avalanche du Colorado.
À noter que Filip Chytil, qui joue avec Alexis Lafrenière à New York, aurait dû être sélectionné par Vegas, ce qui aurait changé considérablement la donne dans la transaction de Max Pacioretty.
