Barry Trotz was interviewed by reporters a little after he traded Yaroslav Askarov to the San Jose Sharks, and he proceeded to rip into his character.

Barry Trotz, the Nashville Predators' general manager, always knew there might come a time when he'd have to part ways with goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, especially after securing an eight-year deal with star goalie Juuse Saros. However, Trotz didn't expect that moment to arrive so soon.
As he begins his second year in Nashville's front office, Barry Trotz revealed in an interview with The Tennessean on Friday that he had engaged in private discussions with Yaroslav Askarov over the past few weeks about a potential trade. The intention was to allow Askarov more time to develop before considering moving him. However, when Askarov's request for a trade became public, Trotz realized that the timeline for a deal would have to be expedited.
"When he asked for the trade request, just privately, he said he would be a good soldier and all that," Trotz said. "Then he came out public and said he wouldn't have much interest in that."
The public revelation of Yaroslav Askarov's trade request caught Barry Trotz off guard, but he knew he had to prioritize the best interests of the team.
"We talked about exploring some things, working together to see where this process would go through training camp," Trotz said. "But once it became public, it pushed to a different place in terms of the decision time."

At that moment, Barry Trotz decided he couldn't allow the situation to become a distraction in the team's pursuit of success and had to get a deal done before training camp got any closer.
"Then if you don't trade him, there's always going to be noise," Trotz said. "We've got a really good vibe from what we did last year. I didn't want there to be something that sucked the air out of that."

Being the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft, Yaroslav Askarov only ever played in three NHL games in his career and won one game. He has a 2.57 GAA and a .914 save %.
