Primeau, who is signed through 2024-25, has been the odd man out at this point, with just one start, but Montembeault could become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
Allen has another year left on his contract, which also includes a seven-team no-trade clause, but this offseason a pair of teams – the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings – had inquired about his services.
Now in his fourth season with Montreal, Allen played in 42 games for the club last season, his most since joining the Canadiens.
