Hockey Hall-of-Famer Scott Niedermayer gets new position with the Anaheim Ducks

One of the best defencemen to ever play the game is moving up with the team where he won a Stanley Cup and has his number retired. The Anaheim Ducks have announced that Scott Niedermayer has been named Special Advisor to the Hockey Operations Department. Before this, he had been serving as a special assignment coach.

"I'm really excited that Scott has taken on an enhanced role within our hockey operations staff," said newly minted Anaheim Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. "His winning culture and great hockey mind will help all of our players and staff moving forward."

Niedermayer spent five seasons with the Ducks from 2005-10, serving as the captain of the Stanley Cup championship team in 2007 when he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He scored 60-204=264 points in 371 regular-season games with Anaheim, most among Ducks defensemen all-time, and had also recorded 8-26=34 points in 56 playoff games. In 2006-07, he set the Ducks franchise record for most points (15-54=69) and assists by a defenseman.

Niedermayer has four Stanley Cups in total, winning three with the New Jersey Devils before signing with Anaheim. He's also a five-time All-Star, a winner of the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman, and has two Olympic gold medals.
