Coyotes willing to take on more bad contracts at the trade deadline

Last summer, the Arizona Coyotes brought in players on bad contracts and received several draft picks to do so. Some of the players they traded for include Shayne Gostisbehere, Anton Stralman, Loui Eriksson and Andrew Ladd.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong is willing to take on more bad contract leading up to the NHL's trade deadline on March 21st.

"Sixteen teams as we talk right now are in long-term injured reserve and capped out. And so those teams might want to get busy before March 21, they're finding a helpful hand from the Arizona Coyotes," Johnston said. "The Coyotes have let it be known that they're willing to take on contracts or money in exchange for future assets, just as we saw them do with a few transactions over the summer. And they're still going to look at some things. They want to know how long that contract is if they are bringing on a player, what type of player it is."

He added, "but the Coyotes are certainly eyeing a chance to be an important go-between at this deadline where so many teams are capped out."

Arizona currently sits in second last in the NHL's standings, three points up on the Montreal Canadiens. The Coyotes have just over $7 million in cap space to work with, so they're more than able to take on a bad contract or two from a team that needs help at the deadline. Florida and Washington are contending teams that have dipped into LTIR, but probably want to add at the deadline. So it's possible that they could reach out to the Coyotes in the coming weeks.
