LeBron has officially said goodbye and is retiring, not from the game he loves, but from social media, as he feels like he needs a reset from online toxicity.

LeBron James has announced a break from social media, announcing the news to his masses of followers.

LeBron, the all-time NBA points record holder, said on X: "And with that said I'll holla at y'all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y'all take care."

The 39-year-old NBA legend, often regarded as one of the greatest athletes in basketball history, had earlier shared a posting by Rich Kleiman, longtime manager of Kevin Durant.

"We can all acknowledge that sports is the last part of society that universally brings people together. So why can't the coverage do the same?" Mr Kleiman wrote on 24 October.

"It's only click bait when you say it. When the platform is so big, you can make the change and allow us all an escape from real life negativity. I for one find it all a waste of breath."

He spoke about negative media narratives in sports, and LeBron echoed it by sharing it on X with his 52.9 million followers, adding simply "AMEN!!" to the message.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward is a month shy of his 40th birthday, making him the oldest active player in the league.

The four-time NBA champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist LeBron secured the latest Olympic title earlier this year at the Paris Games, although not without controversy following the win.

The Lakers currently possess a 10-4 record, riding on their six-game winning streak. They are scheduled to play the next game against Orlando Magic in a home fixture on Thursday.
