Alex Chiasson had an opportunity to win an NHL role with the Detroit Red Wings this pre-season, but now, his career may be over after he was released.

There were plenty of veterans fighting for roster spots this pre-season with plenty of professional tryouts given out around the NHL, but unfortunately, with so much young talent coming through the league, many players have been released by their teams. Now, there's another name to add to that list, with veteran Alex Chiasson and the Detroit Red Wings parting ways after a poor start to the pre-season from the veteran.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and having plenty of skill, Chiasson was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars, and while he's played plenty of games in the NHL, he's just never become the player that he was expected to be. Since that point, Chiasson has played with the Senators, Flames, Capitals, Oilers, Canucks and most recently the Detroit Red Wings, for whom he played 20 games in the 2022/23 campaign.

Over a lengthy career, Chiasson has played in 651 games, tallying 120 goals and 233 points over that time, but at 34-years old, if he can't crack the Detroit Red Wings forward group, it's unclear where his future in the NHL could be. He's still clearly got plenty of gas left in the tank, but after being moved on from Detroit and struggling to make an NHL team a year ago, his time in the league may be done, so now we will wait and see whether he heads overseas or indeed hangs up the skates like some expect.
