Due to unforeseen circumstances on the Swedish team, American goaltender Joey Slavick was forced to represent a different country in the World Junior Summer Showcase.

Now, well after the Stanley Cup playoffs of 2024, many hockey fans have been waiting for some real on-ice action. Luckily, they now have their wishes answered, as the World Junior Summer Showcase is officially underway.

"Officially underway at World Junior Summer Showcase #WJSS"

The first day was set to be two matchups with one American team each. Both the White and Blue teams would face off against Finland and Sweden respectively.

However, Sweden's team faced a goaltending emergency and had to call in a backup. This backup, however, was 17-year-old Joey Slavick from the United States.

"A rare sight: American USNTDP goaltender Joey Slavick is backing up Sweden today. #WJSS"

Despite his chance to shine for another nation, Slavick could not make it happen and USA Blue took down the Swedish team. At the end of the game, the score read a decisive 7-2. Though this was not the result they hoped for, they will likely still be thankful someone bore the burden. Hopefully, the team can pull back their usual goaltender so they do not suffer the same blowout again.

"WJSS final score: Sweden was buried by USA Blue 2-7. Lucas Pettersson finished scoreless."
