5 minor hockey league players receive lengthy suspensions after racial slurs yelled at goalie

Five minor league hockey players, all from the province of Prince Edward Island, have been suspended for 25 games each after a 16-year-old Black goaltender from Nova Scotia had racial slurs yelled at him at a tournament in PEI back in November.

Hockey P.E.I. held a virtual hearing with the players in question back in early February, and made it's ruling on Friday. Both the players and their parents denied any racist remarks were ever made.

As well as the suspensions, the disciplinary committee also ruled that all five players "must complete an educational or learning experience to the satisfaction of the executive director of Hockey P.E.I." That experience cannot be a workshop where the players are simply present. The ruling states they must be fully engaged in the process.

Mark Connors, the goaltender who was the victim of racist taunts, said he's satisfied with the ruling, but added "there's no winning in this."

"The way it affected me, and the way it will affect them — it's going to be with us for the rest of our lives," Connors said Friday.

He said ultimately, he would like to see them own up to their actions, and apologize for what they did.
