Kevin Shattenkirk has been a reliable NHL defenseman for well over a decade, but it appears his career will be coming to an end after rejecting an offer from a Canadian team.

A former Colorado Avalanche 14th overall pick (in 2007!), Kevin Shattenkirk was part of the massive trade for first overall pick Erik Johnson from the St. Louis Blues in 2011.

He went on to play several seasons with the Blues, before going to Washington, then New York, then Tampa Bay, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2020, Anaheim, and finally Boston last season.

While he had not yet called it quits, it appears he has chosen to end his time in the NHL after reportedly refusing to sign with a Canadian team, either Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton.

Longtime New York Rangers reporter Larry Brooks has learned of this, and believes Shattenkirk will hang up the skates due to this:

Slap Shots has learned from a trusted source that the one-time Blueshirts No. 22 rejected an offer from a western Canadian team - Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver - within the past two weeks.

This report was somewhat corroborated by Elliotte Friedman, who said the Edmonton Oilers may still have a chance to sign him due to some interest from both sides:

Among those players looking the Oilers way is veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who has expressed interest in discussing a potential move to Edmonton if the team is looking for defensive depth.

Brooks ended his column by conclusively saying that, barring a perfect scenario, the now father of three is likely done in the league:

Which makes it more likely than not that Shattenkirk will end his career after 952 games unless a perfect scenario arises.

We will see what's next for Kevin Shattenkirk, but the 35-year-old appears to be on track for a lot more family time soon. If this is it for him, it marks the end of an underratedly fantastic career.
