Sean Avery has never been one to play by the NHL's rules, and the former enforcers latest revelation is certainly a testament to that.

Over the past 20 years, the NHL has seen a decrease in the enforcer type player in the league, and with the personalities becoming fewer and farther between, it's become clear that we may never see players like Sean Avery again. For some that's a bad thing, and for others it's a good thing, but with his post playing career as a media personality, we still have plenty of content from the former New York Ranger to take in as a fanbase.

Now, a story that would be shocking in 2024 but common place in 2001 has been revealed, with Avery making the revelation of what his first big purchase in the NHL was when he broke in back with the Detroit Red Wings.

Ounce of Mushrooms

If this came out in today's NHL, there would certainly be plenty of uproar, but back in 2001 this wasn't out of the ordinary, and is perhaps one of the most Sean Avery answers you could ever expect to hear from him. In 580 NHL games, Avery tallied a whopping 1,533 penalty minutes, a sign of the changing times as fighting and that style of play is phased out for quicker, more skilled action.

Avery will be remembered for many things in the NHL, especially the introduction of the 'Sean Avery rule', and away from the ice, his personality will continue to shine through in hockey media, but let's just hope that young players don't follow his career path in any way.
