Failed San Jose Sharks deal to acquire John Tavares revealed
As the hockey world awaits his contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the deal with the San Jose Sharks that almost snagged John Tavares has now been revealed.
John Tavares was one of the top players when he hit free agency. After 8 years with the New York Islanders following being drafted first overall in 2009, the forward entered free agency before signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs and subsequently becoming their 25th captain.
"Introducing the 25th captain of your Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tavares!"
Yet, his time in Toronto was close to nonexistent. During the time, he was looking to relocate elsewhere in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks made the former Islander a massive offer. According to Chris Johnston in a segment from the Steve Dangle Podcast, this was worth $13 million annually for 7 years.

Though this could have been huge for the San Jose Sharks and the player, John Tavares opted to play closer to his hometown, as we all know. Now, with the player heading into his mid-thirties, he could be heading towards the end of his captaincy.
Nevertheless, he still has the title and at least one more season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hopefully, he can pull off the impossible and finally win a Stanley Cup, something he was certainly not going to do with the San Jose Sharks.
