Tonight NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has released his weekly 32 Thoughts write up and has confirmed that the Toronto Maple Leafs have put Timothy Liljegren on the trade block.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are kicking off their 2024-25 campaign tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. While the Maple Leafs take on the Canadiens on the ice Brad Treliving seems to be working behind the scenes as well.

According to Elliotte Friedman defenseman Timothy Liljegren is likely on his way out after being placed on the trade block. Friedman during his 32 Thoughts blog confirmed that the plans if for Brad Treliving to explore trading Timothy Liljegren.

Sounds like Toronto is working to find a landing spot for Timothy Liljegren. He's down the depth chart, not a situation anyone is happy with.

This is something that has been rumored for a couple of weeks now and could come to fruition over the coming weeks. When the Maple Leafs were cutting down their roster some thought that Timothy Liljegren would be a candidate to be put on waivers.

Time to move on from Timothy Liljegren?

Throughout his NHL career fans have had high hopes for Timothy Liljegren. After being drafted 17th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft Timothy Liljegren was looked at as the future of the Maple Leafs. Unfortunately he never really has blossomed like many had hoped. Timothy Liljegren is coming off of his best season in the NHL with 23 points in 55 games. Despite it being his best season Liljegren still did miss significant time due to injury which has become a trend in his career.

The Toronto Maple Leafs seemed to phase Timothy Liljegren out of the lineup throughout the summer. First with the sign and trade for Tanev and then signing Oliver-Ekman Larsson.

At just 25 years old there is plenty of time for him to develop if given the right opportunity. As of now, Elliotte Friedman has not revealed which teams could be a potential trade partner but there likely will be a solid amount of interest.

With Craig Berube taking over and preferring physical defensemen Timothy Liljegren is now on the outside looking in. If the Maple Leafs were going to move on from him now would be the time before he loses any more value by sitting on the bench.
