The Boston Bruins are still without their starting goalie as their contract stalemate with Jeremy Swayman rages on. Darren Dreger has the latest update.

The Boston Bruins made a bold decision this summer by sending goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators ahead of the draft in exchange for a first round pick (Dean Letourneau), and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.

Joonas Korpisalo was a nightmare in Ottawa, but considering the value proposition for the 2023 Vezina winner Ullmark, it was more important to get a first round pick no matter what the other elements of the deal were.

The expectation, however, was that their 1B and budding star Jeremy Swayman would come to terms on a long term deal quickly, considering the $2 million of additional cap space the Bruins freed up in the Linus Ullmark deal.

With reports of a four year $6.2 million contract being the Boston Bruins' latest offer, and Jeremy Swayman possibly asking for an eight year $9.5 million deal, the two sides were over $50 million apart, but per top NHL insider Darren Dreger, they may be closer to an agreement than expected.

"I think Jeremy Swayman has played this out perfectly. He stayed in Boston and skated with his teammates and made sure that everyone there knew that he's committed to being the Boston Bruins' starting goaltender.

I've read some of the numbers... when you look at the resume of Jeremy Swayman, he hasn't played a ton in the National Hockey League so I think Boston is a little reluctant to give him the mega-bucks. What we know is that you can't afford to have your #1 goaltender sitting in the weeds to start the season, so I think they're going to get something done. I think the negotiations are probably closer than what we're reading about."

We will see if the Boston Bruins can get this important piece of business done before training camp. Entering the season with Joonas Korpisalo as their starter would certainly not be ideal.
