In a tragic turn of events, DekHockey goaltender Zachary Bourassa passed away during tournament finals at just 21 years old.

The hockey world has been faced with tragedy after tragedy lately with the loss of Johnny Hockey and his brother Matthew Gaudreau after being struck by a drunk and reckless driver. Unfortunately, the horrors have continued to compound in the NHL offseason, as another player was lost far too soon. During a recent DekHockey tournament finals in Trois-Rivières, goaltender Zachary Bourassa reportedly called for help after showing no signs of discomfort. However, according to HabsOlument Fan contributor Marco Normandin, the 21-year-old goaltender collapsed into an official's arms, passing away from suspected cardiac arrest.

"This weekend, during a DekHockey tournament in Trois-Rivières, Zachary Bourassa, a young goaltender from the region, died in the middle of a game while his team was in the final.

According to our information, early in the game, the young goaltender felt unwell and asked for help before collapsing into the arms of one of the officials. According to information gathered from his family by Radio-Canada journalist Kassandra Lebel, he suffered a cardiac arrest."

Though situations like this seem avoidable with proper on-ice medical attention, this does not seem to be the case in this situation. According to eyewitness reports, a cardiac defibrillator was on hand, and all health personnel sprung into action, but there was ultimately nothing they could do.

"From the very first moments, the young guard was taken care of by people on site, a nurse and a respiratory therapist, among others, who had knowledge of cardiac resuscitation. They did cardiac massages on top of cardiac massages. Sometimes we hear stories that a death could have been avoided if certain maneuvers had been done earlier. Here, it's quite the opposite. If he could have been saved, he would have been. The people there acted like true heroes."

The 21-year-old previously appeared in the NCJHL, playing for 24 games across the Papineauville Vikings, Bytown Royals, and South Greenville Rangers between 2017 and 2022. Now, he has played his last game, and despite the sadness of his loss, his mother shared a post honoring the late player and how he went out doing what he loved. We hope you can join us in wishing the best for Zachary Bourassa's family and community through these difficult times.

"Last night, Zachary left us while practicing his favorite sport. He leaves a giant void around him, he was so young and had his whole life ahead of him. Please watch over us and your beautiful Elo. We love you Zach."
