Avalanche reportedly willing to part with former first round pick at trade deadline
With the National Hockey League's trade deadline only thirty-three days away, teams are preparing to either add and take a run at the Stanley Cup or sell off and gain assets for the future.
One of those teams looking to add is the Colorado Avalanche and in the last couple of weeks, they've been linked to Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
According to Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff, the Avalanche are willing to trade 2020 first round pick Justin Barron in the right deal. Also available is their 2023 first round pick, which general manager Joe Sakic mentioned last week.
"GM Joe Sakic said last week he is open to the possibility of trading his 2023 first-round pick. (They don't have one this summer, they traded it to Arizona in the deal for Darcy Kuemper.)" Seravalli said.
He added, "However, word is filtering out that that defenseman Justin Barron is available in the right deal. Barron, 20 is a 2020 first-round pick. He has 15 points in 30 AHL games this season. File his name away."
One name that's not available is forward Alex Newhook, who Sakic and the Avalanche view as a big piece of their future.
"Teams have been curious which prospects could be on the move. Is Alex Newhook in play? The answer is believed to be no, according to sources. Newhook is a big part of Colorado's future." Seravalli said.
After losing three straight years in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, it appears that Joe Sakic is willing to do whatever it takes at the deadline to get his team over the hump, and into the Western Conference Final and hopefully, the Stanley Cup Final.
