The New York Islanders only have $6 million in cap space this summer, and they need to sign five players. They will likely make a cap dump trade of JG Pageau.

The New York Islanders, under Lou Lamoriello, are in a salary cap crunch thanks to the big deals for Mat Barzal, Ilya Sorokin, and Bo Horvat, as well as long term deals for several other players such as Semyon Varlamov, Pierre Engvall, and Scott Mayfield. Thus, the team will likely make a move this summer, and per NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the culprit is likely to be 700-game NHL veteran Jean Gabriel Pageau.
Eleven months ago, the Islanders traded a second-round pick to Chicago to take Josh Bailey's $5 million cap hit off their hands. Last week, the Islanders traded down in the first-round – which is ultra rare one month out from the Draft – and received an extra second-round pick in the process. Will Lou Lamoriello use that extra capital in an attempt to entice someone to take Pageau? The difference between Pageau and Bailey is that Pageau has an extra year remaining. The Blackhawks bought out Bailey. Pageau still has game left, but not at that price, and the Isles only have $6 million in space to add five more players.
We will see if a deal comes to fruition here; a team like San Jose could be this year's Blackhawks in this scenario. It will certainly be an interesting off-season.
